Racing at OGYC

There are many racing opportunities at OGYC for both experienced and novice racers. Weekly racing for PHRF rated boats is on Wednesday evening at 1900 in Captain Harbor. Three starts for three divisions covering the latest racing machines to the antique cruiser, and all divisions are non-spinnaker.

For one-design racing, Ideal 18s are started on Wednesdays at 1900 in Captain Harbor on a short course with three or four races run in quick succession.

On Sunday afternoons, Ideal 18s, Lasers and Etchells are raced on longer courses with three or four races are sailed over two to three hours. We are joined on Sunday afternoon by sailors from Riverside YC, Indian Harbor YC and the Belle Haven Club which brings as many as 10 to 20 Ideal 18s and over 20 Lasers to the starting line.  Spinnakers are allowed for any class that uses them.

OGYC sponsors several regattas throughout the season:  The Payea and Solstice events are held in June and the USS America Regatta is in early September. Solstice has starts for Lasers and Ideal 18s and USS America has starts for PHRF divisions as well as Lasers and Ideal 18s. Trophies are awarded for all divisions in both regattas.

On four Friday evenings in June and July, each of the four clubs on Captain Harbor host an evening of racing and prior to the Covid outbreak, a post race gathering. These may return in 2022.  Starts are held for PHRF divisions and one-design Ideal 18s.

OGYC is represented at numerous regattas on Long Island Sound throughout the season, both PHRF and one-design.  These include the Block Island Race, the Bermuda Race, Stamford Yacht Club's Denmark Friendship Race, and Larchmont Race Week.
